WHY REGEAR YOUR JEEP?

The most common remark after someone has regeared their Jeep – is “WOW! I should have done this sooner!?”  When adding larger tires or weight to your Jeep, regearing is the most effective way to get power and efficiency back into your Jeep.

What does a Regear do for Your Jeep?

Regearing is the process of changing your pinion gears and ring gears to a different ratio, which changes the balance of torque and speed. Regearing your Jeep is a crucial step in adjusting the size of your tires since improper gearing can result in more stress being transferred to the axle. In all likelihood, when you left the lot in your new Jeep, your drivetrain and gearing were set to provide a balance between torque and speed. If you have added bigger tires or more weight to your Jeep and you feel a loss in power, it's time to regear.

JEEP GEAR RATIO CHARTS

When regearing your Jeep you will need to select which gear ratio is right for you. The charts below are our suggestions from doing hundreds of regears.

General rule as you modify - For each 300LB add-on, (i.e. overland tent, UD60s, frequent towing, rock climbing, etc.) go UP ONE gear ratio. The typical gear ratios installed on a Jeep are: 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13, 5.38

HOW TO SELECT A GOOD REGEAR SHOP?

If you live far off and can't make it down to central Texas for a regear we still want you to find a good shop to do your Jeep regear.

1. Ask how long it will take to do the regear

If it's over 1 day they don't do regears enough to be good at doing regears. Good shops are fast because they do them everyday and have enough practice to hammer them out in 1 day.

2. Ask what does it cost to regear your Jeep

For a Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-2018) expect to pay between $2050 - $2350.  For a Jeep Wrangler JL (2018+) or a Jeep Gladiator expect to pay $2200 - $2700. YES THIS IS FOR BOTH AXLES. Most often the most expensive shop is not the right shop for you. If a shop is not experienced in doing regears they include the cost of more labor (because of the reason above) and the cost of additional warranty.

When you call make sure to ask them what is included in the cost. Scroll down to see what should be included.

3. Ask around

Most areas have a Jeep group on social media. Go on and just ask. See what other people have experienced and who they would suggest for your area.

4. Know what is included

The price for a regear should include front and rear axles. You would be surprised how may times we have heard of shops just quoting one axle for the same price as it would to do both. Don't be fooled, make sure you ask. Look below for what else would be good to have included in your regear.

REGEAR COST?

Our price for a Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-2018) our price is $2150.  If you have a limited slip add $10 to this price.

Our price for a Jeep Wrangler JL (2018+) our price $2300.

Our price for a Jeep Gladiator JT or Wrangler Rubicon add $50 to the above quote.

The regear price includes:

  • Both front and rear axles

  • Ring and Pinion and install kits

  • New front seals

  • Re-programming for tire size

  • All fluids – even the fluid after completion of a successful break-in procedure!

  • Labor

  • 500 mile inspection

WHAT IS THE REGEAR BREAK-IN PROCEDURE?

Breaking in gears is essential to the longevity and warranty of your re-gear. Use this check list to plan ahead when picking up your Jeep after a regear.

  • The first drive with your new gears should be under normal driving conditions (No hard starts, No racing, No off-roading, No towing and not at Highway speeds).

  • The vehicle should be driven 15-20 minutes around town, normal stop and go driving. Then you should let the vehicle “Completely Cool” (this will allow the gear oil to cool down so it does not reach temperatures that will break down the oil, causing loss of protection)

  • Repeat the 10-15 minute drive and cooling off period 2-3 times.

  • Then you will want to drive on the highway and repeat the process at least 2 times not exceeding 65 MPH, be sure to let the axle assembly completely cool between drives (very important).

  • Lastly you will want to change the gear oil after the initial 500 miles and your gears are broken in correctly.  We do this for you, it's included in the price. Just contact us after 500 miles.

Note: If your Jeep will be used for towing, repeat the break in procedure the first time it is used to tow. Breaking in gears is essential to the longevity and warranty of your re-gear.

Save money by installing more at the same time

When you have your Jeep brought in for a regear you can add-on other installs that will save you on labor charges because the Jeep axles are already open.

  • Lockers

  • Better Axle shafts

  • Ball-joints

  • Rear seals
